Lanterns can be viewed as a live website on lanternsofhope.ca
Lanterns is a custom-coded platform revolutionizing storytelling online, targeting younger audiences most affected by mental health issues with hope-instilling narratives. The custom display font I designed and contrasting color themes symbolize the light and darkness in mental health battles, setting a new standard in engaging, empathetic web design for storytelling.

The project aimed to create an online platform that catered to those seeking hope as it pertains to their mental health. Given the young median age of those struggling with mental health I had to create something that spoke to that demographic and engaged it on a deep level.

I visualized the most youthful and modern storytelling experience that also spoke to the mental health recovery journey, I designed and developed a custom modern display typeface derived from the star like shape of a sparkle, I developed the website by custom coding it using javascript frameworks like reactjs/nextjs and animation libraries such as gsap.

It is a reimagination of the online storytelling experience, one that speaks to the mental health struggle, the tension between light and darkness, the ups and downs of recovery journeys and the hope represented by the light/dark contrast in the custom font usage and the overall colours of the platform.

The platform is still in the initial phases of gathering stories as I work with mental health professionals at the Royal Ottawa Hospital to replace the placeholder content with real stories and open the door for volunteer development contribution to customize and bring each story to life. The vision is to host a wide range of stories and incorporate a filtering feature helping users find something in line with their experiences and circumstances so they can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
